Updated October 12, 2026 Ā· by the PMCLEAR team

PSM I and CSM are the two best-known entry-level Scrum Master certifications. Both are respected. They differ mostly in how you earn them: CSM requires a live course, while PSM I is a harder online test that you can take without a course.

Which one is harder?

The CSM test is shorter and has a lower pass mark, and you take it right after a two-day class. The PSM I test has more questions, less time per question and an 85% pass mark, so most people need more self-study for it. Neither is ā€œbetterā€ for everyone: choose the one that fits how you learn and what your employer asks for.

Can I do both?

Yes. Both are based on the same Scrum Guide. Some people take a CSM class through work and then take PSM I to prove their knowledge in a harder test. If you study for one, most of the work also prepares you for the other.
