Integrating and reporting a hybrid project

HybridFree preview
Goal: After this lesson you can combine predictive and agile progress into one schedule and one report, using increment milestones and agile earned value.

1The situation

Two reports, no picture

The steering committee receives an earned value report for the robot cell hardware and a velocity chart for the MES software. They ask: “So, are we on track overall?” Nobody can answer in one sentence.

A software vendor delivers four-week increments, while the plant's master schedule has fixed FAT and SAT milestones. Where does the vendor's progress appear?

Hybrid projects need one integrated view.

2One schedule

Show agile work in the master schedule as increment or release milestones, aligned with key integration points (FAT, SAT). Track them with the agile team's release plan and reviews.

4How it looks on the exam

Exam-style question 1. In a hybrid programme, the steering committee receives earned value reports for the hardware, while the software team reports only velocity. The committee wants a consistent view of cost and schedule performance. What should the project manager do?
A. Require the software team to abandon sprints
B. Report the two parts separately
C. Use an agile earned value approach for the software and integrate it into the programme report
D. Convert velocity directly into SPI
Show the answer and the decode
Answer: C.
In simple English
Two kinds of progress data, one governance body.
What is the question really asking?
How to report.
Key words / trigger
“consistent view”
PMP logic
Agile EV lets software progress be integrated with predictive EV.
Why the wrong answer looks attractive
Forcing a predictive schedule damages how the team works.

5Remember this

Your memory card

  • Agile work → increment milestones in the master schedule
  • Agile EV: % points planned/done × release budget
  • One integrated report, tailored by audience
  • Don't force agile teams into predictive plans just for reporting
