The exam format and question types

All approachesFree preview
Goal: After this lesson you know the question types you may meet, how to approach each, and where to check the current official exam numbers.

1The situation

No surprises on exam day

A well-prepared student saw her first drag-and-drop question on exam day and lost five minutes figuring out how it worked. Another student had never practised case studies with exhibits.

Knowing the format doesn't replace knowing the content, but it removes surprises that cost time and confidence.

2What to expect

The PMP exam covers three domains (People, Process, Business Environment) with predictive, agile and hybrid scenarios, and uses several item types beyond simple multiple choice.

Domains
Three
People, Process, Business Environment.
Approaches
Mixed
Predictive, agile and hybrid scenarios everywhere.
Item types
Several
Multiple choice, multiple response, matching, hotspot, fill-in, case studies.
Practise every item type before the exam, especially case studies with exhibits, and use the official tutorial/sample questions from PMI.

3Item types and tips

Item typeWhat you doTip
Multiple choiceChoose one of fourEliminate distractors first

Always check the current official numbers (questions, time, breaks, domain weights) in PMI's exam content outline and handbook, and in the free PMCLEAR guide “PMP exam format 2026”. They change between versions.

Practise each type before the exam.

4How it looks on the exam

Exam-style question 1. Which TWO actions are appropriate when the trigger of an identified risk with a pre-approved contingent response occurs? (Choose the option listing both.)
A. Reassess the probability; wait for the sponsor
B. Implement the contingent response; update the risk register
C. Submit a change request; hold a workshop
D. Develop a workaround; close the risk

Answer: B.
In simple English
Multiple-response style.
What is the question really asking?
The two appropriate actions.
Key words / trigger
“pre-approved contingent response”
PMP logic
Implement the plan and keep records current.
Why the wrong answer looks attractive
Reassessing seems careful but wastes the planning already done.
