MVP, increments and delivering value early
Agile and hybridFree preview
Goal: After this lesson you can explain MVP, MMF and increments, and choose early, incremental delivery to test assumptions and bring value sooner.
1The situation
Nine months to find out
A client wants a predictive-maintenance platform. Before investing, they need to know one thing: will maintenance technicians actually use a mobile app to log machine faults?
The product team proposes building the complete platform in nine months. If the answer to the key question is “no”, nine months and the budget are gone.
An MVP answers the key question in weeks, not months.
2Minimum viable product
An MVP is the smallest version of a product that can test the most important business assumption with real users. It is about learning, not about a cheap or incomplete product.
MVP
Learn
Test the key assumption with the least effort.
Increment
Usable
Each sprint ends with a usable, done increment.
Value early
Earn sooner
Releasing parts early starts benefits and ROI sooner.
Early increments give feedback and value months earlier.
4How it looks on the exam
Exam-style question 1. A client wants to know whether technicians would actually use a mobile app to log machine faults before investing in a full platform. The team proposes building the complete platform over nine months. What should the project manager recommend?
A. Build the complete platform
B. Run a nine-month market study first
C. Build a minimum viable product to test whether technicians use the app, then decide on further investment
D. Build the back-end infrastructure first
Show the answer and the decode
Answer: C.
In simple English
A key assumption must be tested before a big investment.
What is the question really asking?
What to build first.
Key words / trigger
“actually use … before investing”
PMP logic
An MVP tests the key hypothesis with minimal investment.
Why the wrong answer looks attractive
The full platform seems more professional but risks building something unused.
5Remember this
Your memory card
MVP = smallest product that tests the key assumption
Each sprint delivers a usable increment
Early releases bring value and feedback sooner
Measure outcomes, not only outputs; adapt the backlog to evidence
