Which one first?
You are new to project work
Start with PSM I. It has no requirements, you can prepare in a few weeks, and it teaches you how agile teams work. Later, when you have enough experience, PSM I knowledge helps with the agile part of PMP.
You have led projects for several years
Go for PMP if you meet the experience requirement. It covers more than one way of working and is known in many industries, from construction and engineering to IT.
You want both
Many people take PSM I first because it is shorter, then PMP. Agile and hybrid ways of working are a large part of the PMP exam, so your Scrum knowledge carries over.
A common trap when you study both
PMP questions about agile use PMI's words, like āservant leaderā, āiterationā and āteam charterā. PSM I questions use only the Scrum Guide's exact words, like āDevelopersā, āSprintā and āaccountabilityā. When you switch between the two, read each question in the language of its own exam.
Questions people ask
Can I take PSM I without project experience?
Yes. PSM I has no experience or training requirements.
How much experience do I need for PMP?
PMI asks for 3 years of project experience with a bachelor's degree, 4 years with an associate's degree, or 5 years with a secondary diploma, all within the last 10 years, plus 35 hours of project management training or an active CAPM. Check PMI's page for the details.
Does PSM I help with the PMP exam?
Yes, for the agile and hybrid questions. PMP also covers predictive planning, risk, cost and much more, so you still need PMP-specific study.
Both programs use the same simple-English method: short lessons, practice questions and every answer explained.
