PMP Conflict Management Techniques Explained Simply
Encourage the people in conflict to resolve it directly and collaboratively; escalate only if that fails.
In simple words
When two people disagree, first ask them to solve it together. You only step in or escalate if that fails. In an emergency, like a safety issue, you can decide on the spot.
What the PMP exam wants
Conflict is normal and can be useful. PMI's preferred technique is collaborate / problem solve: find a solution that satisfies both sides. Others: compromise (both give something), smooth/accommodate (focus on agreement), force/direct (one side wins; for emergencies), withdraw/avoid (postpone).
Escalation order: the people involved talk directly → the PM or servant leader facilitates → functional manager or sponsor. In agile, the team tries first.
Real example
The mechanical designer and the controls engineer disagree about sensor placement. The PM brings them together with the drawings and asks them to find a solution that meets both the mechanical and the safety needs.
The common trap
Tempting wrong answers: “the PM decides,” “escalate to the sponsor immediately,” “report to HR.” Start with the people involved, privately if it's personal.
Remember: Collaborate first. Force only in an emergency.
🗝 Words to notice in the question
