New PMP Exam 2026: Format, Domains and Question Types in Simple English
From July 2026 the PMP exam follows a new Examination Content Outline: 180 questions in 240 minutes, three domains, and new question styles such as case studies with exhibits.
In simple words
The exam is still 180 questions in 4 hours, but the mix changed. Business Environment is now a big part (about one question in four), most questions are agile or hybrid, and some questions come as a longer case with charts and tables. You need to read longer English texts and still find what the question really asks.
What the PMP exam wants
Size and time: 180 questions (170 scored, 10 unscored pretest questions you cannot recognize), 240 minutes, two 10-minute breaks. That is about 80 seconds per question.
Domains: People 33% (leading and supporting the team), Process 41% (planning, delivering and controlling the work), Business Environment 26% (strategy, value, governance, compliance, organizational and external change). Business Environment grew from a small part to about one question in four.
Approaches: PMI says roughly 40% of questions are predictive and 60% are agile or hybrid, mixed through all three domains. Read every question for clues about the approach.
Question styles: standard multiple choice and multiple response, plus case or scenario questions (a longer story with exhibits such as charts, tables or a schedule, followed by several questions), graphic-based questions, matching and point-and-click. Always check PMI's official Examination Content Outline before you book.
Real example
A candidate who works full time plans 8 weeks: weeks 1–2 the PMP English Decoder and People; weeks 3–4 Process and formulas; week 5 Business Environment on purpose (governance, compliance, value, change); weeks 6–7 timed blocks of 45 and a daily mistake review; week 8 one full 180-question practice exam, then rest before the exam day.
The common trap
Tempting wrong plans: “study the process groups chapter by chapter like the old exam” or “Business Environment is small, skip it.” It is now about 26% of the exam, and most questions are agile or hybrid, so a plan built only on predictive processes leaves big gaps.
Remember: 180 questions · 240 minutes · 33 / 41 / 26 · most questions agile or hybrid · practice long cases and timed blocks.
🗝 Words to notice in the question
“case study”, “exhibit”, “refer to the chart” → read the question’s last sentence first, then look only for the facts it needs

Question 1 How much of the July 2026 PMP exam is the Business Environment domain?
Show the answer
Answer: B. Business Environment is about 26% of the new exam (People 33%, Process 41%). Study it on purpose, not as leftovers.
Question 2 A candidate has 240 minutes for 180 questions. About how much time is that per question, before breaks?
Show the answer
Answer: B. 240 minutes ÷ 180 questions ≈ 1.3 minutes, about 80 seconds. Practice timed blocks so long case questions do not eat your time.
