Servant Leadership for the PMP Exam, Explained Simply
A servant leader supports the team: removes obstacles, protects it from distractions and helps it grow, instead of giving orders.
In simple words
In agile PMP questions, the project manager is a helper, not a boss. You clear the road so the team can do its work, and you coach people to solve problems themselves.
What the PMP exam wants
A servant leader removes impediments, protects the team from outside interruptions, facilitates discussions, coaches, and makes sure the team has what it needs. The team is self-organizing: it decides how to do the work.
On the exam, prefer answers where the PM facilitates, coaches, asks questions and lets the team decide. Avoid answers where the PM assigns tasks to individuals, decides technical solutions alone, or escalates a problem the team could solve itself. Step in more directly only for blockers outside the team’s control, safety or ethics.
Real example
Developers lose hours every week because a manager from another department asks them for small favors. The servant leader talks with that manager and agrees that all requests go through the product owner, so the team can focus on the sprint.
The common trap
Tempting wrong answers: “assign the task to the most experienced developer” or “tell the team the solution to save time.” A servant leader facilitates and coaches. The team decides how to do its work.
Remember: Remove obstacles, protect the team, coach. Don’t command.
